FILMMAKING CALLS FOR ENTRIES

Videotect, the Architecture Minnesota video competition that debuted earlier this year with 24 entries, more than 20,000 online plays, and a capacity-crowd screening event at the Walker Art Center Cinema, returns this fall and winter with more prize money, more time to make the videos, and a fast-moving topicHere are the basics:

True Independent Film Festival's Student Film Block
Deadline: February 15, 2012
Introducing the expanded call for entries for the 2nd annual Student Film Block, to be presented during Seattle's True Independent Film festival May 4th through May 12, 2012. New to the festival this year every student who submits a film will automatically get the option to have his or her short distributed on a 2 Disc DVD collection. This DVD and Blu-Ray collection will be pressed on a 100 run distro sold exclusively online. Filmmakers must be between the ages of 16 to 22 years old and have directed or produced a short film, music video, documentary or experimental film no longer than 25-30 minutes. 2012 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival
Postmark Deadline: February 10, 2012

The Festival returns to St. Anthony Main Theatre in Minneapolis, April 12 - May 3, 2012. Presenting over 280 films to an audience that last year exceeded 40,000, this is the largest, most anticipated film event in the Upper Midwest, and one of the largest annual cultural events in the Twin Cities. The 2012 competition prizes and categories will be announced soon. All Minnesota made films will be eligible for competition selection and are exempt from submission fees. The Shamrock Film Festival is Accepting Short Films Submissions.

The fourth annual Shamrock Film Festival will be held March, 10th in Rosemount, MN. Enjoy viewing independent filmmakers short movies ranging from amateur to professional. Doc Challenge  
Deadline, Wednesday, February 29, 2012
Now in its 7th year, the Doc Challenge takes place March 1-5, 2012 with registration now open to filmmakers worldwide. The premise is simple: filmmakers will push their skills to the limit by making a short (4-7 minute) documentary in just five days. Top films will make their world premiere at North America's largest documentary festival, the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Click here for details. 

The Out Twin Cities Film Festival

2012 will represent the Twin Cities' 3rd annual celebration of local, national and international GLBTQ films and filmmakers on May 31st -- June 3rd. They are excited to bring the best of what cinema has to offer to Minneapolis/St, Paul and the surrounding region at the St. Anthony Main Theater alongside the Mississippi River. Their mission is to connect and celebrate the diversity of the community through the art of cinema by producing a provocative annual festival showcasing Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer filmmakers and films.

The Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant
Deadline, Friday, Feb. 3, 2012
funds first time documentary makers for travel and accommodations at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, April 12-15, 2012. For four days, grant recipients will be given access to films, participate in master classes and be mentored by experienced filmmakers. Two filmmakers will be chosen for the grant, now in its fifth year. 

Aesthetica Short Film Festival Now Open for Entries!
Deadline, May 31, 2012
ASFF 2012 takes place in York, UK from November 8 - 11. The screenings will cover a wide variety of genres and filmic styles, including: drama, documentary, animation, comedy, music video, thriller, experimental and artists' film. The films will be showcased across 15 iconic locations in the city, from medieval halls to boutique cinemas and in addition to four days of screenings there will also be a series of master classes, workshops and networking with leading industry figures.

The winner will also receive approximately $775 among other prizes and screenings at a number of other UK festivals. he runner-up will receive approximately $390. A shortlist of finalists will be included on the ASFF Sampler DVD, which will be distributed with the December 2012 issue of Aesthetica Magazine, an international arts and culture publication. Hammer to Nail Short Film Contest

The fee for entry is $30. Working Films/The MacArthur Foundation
Reel Aging: Real Change
Deadline, Friday, Jan. 13, 2012
Working Films, with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, announces Reel Aging: Real Change, an initiative that will tie compelling documentary films and transmedia projects that explore aging to ongoing policy work and grassroots campaigns supporting older populations globally. This new initiative will bring together media makers and advocates of elder rights for a residency and collaborative campaign that will offer audiences a unique way to reflect on how the aging process affects multiple generations all at once, as we head towards a future we all face - growing older.

We are seeking applications from media makers for participation in Reel Aging: Real Change. All nonfiction projects that explore the aging experience are eligible to apply, and applicants may be at any stage of production or distribution, from new and completed projects to works-in-progress. We are extending the deadline until Friday, January 13. Online application up until 11:59pm on Friday, January 13, any materials sent through the mail or by express must be postmarked by Jan 13.

The Screenwriter's Workshop Script-to-Screen/Fresh Filmmaker Short Script Contest
Deadline, Sunday, January 15, 2012 (third and final round)
New this year: a two-step contest combining SWW's "Script-to-Screen" and IFP's "Fresh Filmmakers Production Grant" - Screenwriters' Workshop seeks from its members short screenplay entries over the coming months for the Script-to-Screen Challenge 2012. This challenge gives screenwriters the opportunity to write with production values in mind and have one winning short script shot by an IFP director & an IFP-MCTC crew with a budget of $3000 ($2000 from SWW and $1000 from IFP) during the summer of 2012.

Ashland Independent Film Festival  
Deadlines- Late: Dec. 9, Withoutabox: Dec 16    
April 12 - 16 2012. The Ashland Independent Film Festival is five days of the highest quality independent film in this historic town the Washington Post called "a dream you'll never want to leave." One of MovieMaker Magazine's "25 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee."

The Jewish Community Center of St. Paul (St. Paul JCC) is looking for filmmakers of all experience levels for their 2012 "JCC Commercial Contest" beginning this December. Interested filmmakers must attend a short informational meeting on November 28th at 6pm (Or send a representative). FILM INDEPENDENT'S DOCUMENTARY LAB
Deadline: December 2011
 Designed to help filmmakers who are currently in production or post-production on their feature-length documentary films, the Documentary Lab is an intensive seven-week program running in Los Angeles in March and April 2011. The Lab's focus is twofold: (1) provide creative feedback and story notes to the selected filmmakers; and (2) help filmmakers strategize the completion, distribution, and marketing of their film.

Additionally the program serves to advance the careers of the Lab Fellows by introducing them to film professionals who can advise them on both the craft and business of documentary filmmaking. More info>

Films of any length from student filmmakers with “Wisconsin ties.” The Festival will take place Wednesday, 18 April - Sunday, 22 April, 2012 in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.

The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival  
Late Deadline: November 30
Now accepting entries for the 15th annual Festival to be held April 12 - April 15, 2012 in Durham, NC. Films submitted will be eligible for the NEW DOCS competitive program. Full Frame exhibits nearly 100 feature-length and short documentary films in various categories during the four-day festival. In 2011, 66 films were selected for NEW DOCS from 1200 entries, nearly half of which were from international filmmakers.

Werner Herzog's Rogue Film School
Deadline: December 3
Attention, doc filmmakers: Werner Herzog is teaching a four-day film seminar in Los Angeles early next year. It's part of his Rogue Film School touring seminars and will take place in a hotel conference room January 20-23, 2012. The class will be limited to a maximum of 65 participants, making for an intimate atmosphere and there are no academic requirements. Per Rogue Film School's website, "The Rogue Film School will not teach anything technical related to film-making. For this purpose, please enroll at your local film school." All you have to do is fill out a brief written application and submit a short film (on DVD) that you have directed yourself. Go here for the application. During the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival where Herzog's "Into the Abyss" world premiered, the director shared a few essential lessons from the program.

Crash the Super Bowl
Deadline: November 21
Doritos' "Crash the Super Bowl" campaign is looking for the next amazing, action packed, cutting edge Doritos commercial made by YOU!  Voters will picked the best user-made videos to air on this years Super Bowl alongside the spot by "The Lonely Island".  There will be 5 (five) finalist prizes that consist of $25,000 and a trip to Indianapolis for a private Super Bowl XLVI party hosted by DORITOS® for all Finalists.  You may only submit videos during the contest entry period, which ends on 11/21/11.  For more info and guidelines, go here.

 

Annual National Girls & Women in Sport Day Film Festival

The Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota is going to host its 2nd annual film festival in conjunction with the 26th Annual National Girls & Women in Sport Day on January 30, 2012. The Tucker Center is the first and only one of its kind in the world and is an interdisciplinary research center leading a pioneering effort to examine how sport and physical activity affect the lives of girls and women, their families, and communities.  We are looking for films that relate to (and celebrate!) women and girls in sport. RE/MAX Results is hosting their 2nd Annual Results.net Film Festival in which they ask film-makers to creatively show the heart and feel of their city and neighborhood. They want to know what makes it entertaining, comfortable, different. The Portland Oregon Women's Film Festival (a.k.a. POWFest)

Chicago Screenwriters Network Contest

It's the contest run by writers for writers. Now in its third year, the CSN Contest offers a Grand Prize of $500, but more importantly, the chance to be read by Hollywood Production companies, agencies and managers.   In addition to the winning prize, top scripts in each genre - Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror and Family - also receive a cash prize and a chance at Hollywood companies. IFP Independent Filmmaker Labs 
Call for Entries: First Feature Directors with Documentary or Narrative Films in Post-Production

IFP's Independent Filmmaker Labs are a year-long fellowship supporting independent filmmakers when they need it most: through the completion, marketing, and distribution of their first features. Labs provide community, mentorship, and film-specific strategies to help filmmakers reach their artistic goals, support the film's launch, and maximize exposure in the global marketplace. The program consists of three focused workshops in spring, fall and winter in New York City..

IFP seeks to ensure that at least half of participating projects have an inclusive range of voices in key positions. We especially encourage female and minority directors to apply, as well as filmmakers from outside NY & LA.

Rooftop Films is accepting submissions for their 2011 summer series. Rooftop Films engages diverse communities by showing independent movies outdoor, producing new films, coordinating youth media education and renting equipment at low cost to artists.  

The International Documentary Challenge returns to Hot Docs in 2011!
Now in it's 6th year, The International Documentary Challenge returns to the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto. This year's challenge takes place March 3-7, 2011 with registration now open. Hot Docs dates are April 28 - May 08, 2011. The Doc Challenge is a timed filmmaking competition where filmmakers have 5 days to make a short non-fiction film (4-7 minutes.) All of the registered participants make their films during the same time period (March 3-7, 2011) and are required send off the film by the deadline.

Videotect Competition

Architecture Minnesota magazine announces Videotect, a video competition that invites people of all ages and backgrounds to assemble creative, thought-provoking commentary
on the skyway and its impact on urban life. Hot Docs is accepting project proposals for the upcoming Hot Docs Forum (HDF), May 4 & 5, taking place during the 2011 Hot Docs Festival, April 28 - May 8. Clean Energy Resource Teams Green Video Shorts Contest
Deadline: January 7th at 5pm
Submit a digital short for a chance to win $500 or cool clean energy prizes! We will have an 18-day public voting period in January, and finalists will be screened at the CERTs 2011 Conference Reception on the evening of February 2nd, 2011!

St. Cloud Short Film Festival
Submission deadline is January 13th.
This will be the first St. Cloud Short Film Festival. The goal of the St Cloud Short Film Festival is to give those talented film makers a place to show their work and an event that everyone come enjoy. This year we will have individuals who work in the film industry judge and award the Judges Choice Award in each category and the Best of Show Award. Also we will have online voting to determine the Peoples Choice Awards in each category.

Hot Docs Film Submission Deadline Approaching

Select narrative features, documentary features, and short films participate in the Festival’s three competitive sections, the winners of which are chosen by special juries.
