SCREENWRITING BOOT CAMP

Come learn the nuts and bolts of screenwriting! Part of each day will be devoted to watching and discussing portions of great films that have a lot to teach about structure and what it means to write memorable and compelling stories for the screen. We’ll also spend time sharing our own freshly-written script pages with one another. We’ll have lots of fun, and by the end of the week, you’ll know the basics of screenwriting and a lot about film and television. Best of all, you’ll complete a script for a short film!
SHORT CUTS CAMP

M–F, June 18–22, 1–5 pm

Max. enrollment: 12 students, for ages 11–15
The perfect camp for the future director! Students will create two short films over the course of the week. You’ll be introduced to the filmmaking process by making a personal statement film, then add further production value in creating video poem shorts. You’ll learn the skills of developing and storyboarding a film idea, directing a production with professional gear, and editing with Final Cut Pro. All completed films will be submitted for broadcast on local cable television.
DOCUMENTARY CAMP: BRIDGING THE POLITICAL DIVIDE

M–F, July 23–26, 1–5 pm & July 27, 10–5 pm
Tuition: $225
Max. enrollment: 10 students, for ages 13-17
The class will create a documentary examining the state of politics in Minnesota through interviews with state congressmen from both sides of the aisle. Students will learn the entire process of documentary filmmaking, from pre-production to distribution. The final film will be submitted to film festivals and broadcast on local cable stations. Production days (Tuesday & Wednesday) will be on location at the State Capitol. Other sessions will be held at IFP.
THE ART OF THE MUSIC VIDEO

M–F, July 30–August 3, 1–5 pm

Learn to make music videos from the professionals! Students will team up with Northern Outpost Media, a local music video production team, to create an original music video for a local band. In the process, students will learn the history of music videos and gain a greater understanding of the genre’s impact on contemporary filmmaking.
BASICS OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY MADE FUN
Instructor: Marcie Stein
M–F, June 25–29, 1–5 pm
Tuition: $225
Max. enrollment: 12 students, for ages 12–17
If you own a digital SLR camera and want to explore your camera’s capabilities to become confident about using it to express your creativity, this camp is for you! We’ll demystify the concepts of composition, ISO, shutter speed, f-stops, white balance, and digital histograms. Students will have fun experimenting with shooting in different environments and lighting conditions, and learn some great post-production techniques using Photoshop. As the photographer Ken Rockwell put it, “The camera’s only job is to get out of the way of making photographs.”
INSTRUCTOR PROFILES
Maxwell Becker is IFP’s Equipment & Facilities Manger, a filmmaker and musician. He—along with fellow Minneapolis College of Art and Design graduates Kevin Russell and Joe Clark—founded Northern Outpost Media, a Minneapolis based production company that specializes in uniquely organic music videos. The company began in 2008 and produced over 20 episodes of an online web series that focused on the local music scene by showcasing bands and musicians in a live studio environment. A year later, Northern Outpost began producing distinctive music videos that premiered on MTV, The Fuse Network, Pitchfork, Stereogum, and Paste Magazine.
David Grant is a Twin Cities-based screenwriter and playwright. As a playwright, he has been commissioned to write new work for the Minnesota Science Museum, the Minnesota Historical Society, Mixed Blood Theater, VocalEssence, The Playwrights’ Center, and Great American History Theatre. As a screenwriter, he has written drama for Twin Cities Public Television, Russell Simmons’ Def Pictures, HBO New York, Davis Entertainment, and the Showtime Network. Grant has been a recipient of screenwriting fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the McKnight Foundation.
Marcie Stein is a locally based photographer with a wicked case of wanderlust. She specializes in portraits of people from all walks (and crawls—baby, that is) of life. She is fascinated with practicing old photographic processes like gelatin-silver, hand-colored images, pinhole, cyanatype, and poloroid transfer. Her love of photography and the wish to share its beauty and mystery with the immediate world has resulted in her teaching children and adults of all ages. Her studio is located in the Grain Belt Brewery Building in Northeast Minneapolis.
Deacon Warner is the Youth Program Coordinator for IFP Media Arts. During the school year he teaches documentary video production through in-school residencies as well as an after school video production program housed at IFP. His students’ work has been accepted into many festivals and screenings and won numerous awards, including a 2008 Award of Excellence from the Minneapolis School Board. In 2010, Gone Fishing, a short documentary made as part of Deacon's youth summer camp, won the Special Focus Award at the Minnesota Historical Society's 1968 Project Film Competition.
